Definition: The pericardial sac, also called the pericardium, is a pouch of highly elastic tissue that surrounds and encloses the heart. The pericardial sac helps to protect the heart from infection and trauma. A small amount of fluid in the space between the heart muscle and the pericardial sac provides lubrication, and allows the heart to beat freely.
