Stenosis -

"Stenosis," which means "narrowing," is a term in cardiology used for two different kinds of problems: coronary artery disease, and heart valve disease.

With regard to coronary artery disease, stenosis refers to the area of narrowing or blockage in the coronary artery caused by atherosclerosis.

With regard to heart valve disease, stenosis refers to a cardiac valve that is no longer able to to open properly. Because the valve opening is narrower than it is supposed to be, pressure builds up behind the valve. This increased pressure can lead to various cardiac symptoms, and to abnormal cardiac function.
