How to Exercise For a Healthy Heart
From your Guide

Regular physical activity is good for your heart. It lowers blood cholesterol, helps lose excess weight, and keeps blood pressure normal. Here's how you can fit exercise into your daily routine.

Difficulty Level: Easy    Time Required: 30 min d

Here's How:
  1. Exercising even for a few minutes every day is good for your heart. Try and build it into your daily life.
  2. Take a short walk at lunch time or after dinner.
  3. Use the stairs instead of an elevator.
  4. Get off the bus a couple of stops earlier, and walk the rest of the distance.
  5. Park your car further away from your destination and walk there.
  6. Better still, ride a bicycle instead of taking out your car.
  7. Try to spend time daily working in your garden or backyard.
  8. Go out dancing, or swimming, or skating.
  9. Combine exercise with a family outing. Make sure the trip involves physical activity, like swimming, hiking, skiing or even mountain climbing!
  10. Play games - basketball, badminton, or volleyball - in your backyard or neighbourhood park.
  11. Take your dog out for a walk daily.
  12. Fit in other vigorous activity like brisk walking, running, skipping rope or swimming into your daily life style.

Tips:

  1. Regular sustained physical activity is better than occasional bursts.
  2. Start off slowly and work up gradually.
  3. If you have medical problems, consult your doctor before beginning an exercise program.
