News From the American College of Cardiology Meetings

Thursday March 16, 2006
DrRich spent a busy week in Atlanta attending the 2006 Scientific Sessions of the American College of Cardiology. Of the hundreds of clinical studies that were reported there, three in particular will probably have long-term general significance:

1) Patients with vascular disease and multiple risk factors did not receive benefit from adding clopidogrel (Plavix) to aspirin therapy - in fact they may have had worsened outcomes.

2) High-dose rosuvastatin (Crestor) appeared to produce actual improvement in coronary artery lesions when taken over a 2-year period.

3) The phenomenon of late, sudden and life-threatening occlusion of drug-coated stents finally came out of the closet, and is now being actively discussed and studied by cardiologists.
