Tuna Fish
- My total cholesterol has regularly measured between 248 and 278 for the past 25 years. No doctor has never strongly recommended drugs because my HDL has always been between 89 and 101. The one difference in my diet and exercise regimen that determines whether my HDL is 89 or 101 is the quantity of tuna fish I've been eating in the weeks prior to testing. I don't see the same results with fish oil capsules or salmon. To minimize the mercury I take in, I eat troll-caught tuna that is lower in mercury than the regular canned tuna in grocery stores. There have been times when I've eaten much less tuna before testing, and then my HDL drops into the 70s. I think the reason it stays that high is due to my other habits. I eat lots of vegetables, mostly monounsaturated fats, and mostly fish in the form of salmon and tuna as my protein source. I eat some chicken and turkey fairly regularly, and have red meat and pork maybe 2-3 times per year, and in small amounts. I also walk A LOT!

Soy
- All my cholesterol values were constantly too high when I started to use daily 1 liter of soy-milk instead of low-fat milk and 1 liter of soy-juice (mixed with orange juice or pineapple juice, etc) six years ago and by the next measurements three months later they were all normal. They have remained normal ever since, although my HDL is sometimes low! Last month's numbers: Total 127, Trig 73, LDL 83 and HDL 29 all in mg/dl of course! I started excercising and hope that will help to increase my HDL!

Diet changes raised HDL the fastest
- I am a 66 yr. old male with severe asthma so exercise is not the best option for me to raise or keep my HDL at a high level - currently 82. I have found that eating foods that have been historically condemned for causing high cholesterol - meat, butter, peanut butter, etc. - raised my HDL level very quickly. In a period of 3 months, I went from 53 mg./dL. to 82 mg./dL. I believe that plant sterols (phytosterols) also contribute to maintaining the high level as I eat mushrooms sauteed in butter as often as 4 or 5 times a week.

Mrs.
- For the past month, I have eaten oatmeal with a little honey and some blueberries or raspberries each morning. I have cut out mayonnaise and substituted mustard. I have eaten fish at least twice a week and trying hard to eat more fruits and vegetables. (The fruits are really difficult for me.) Thus said, I have lowered my cholesterol from 166 to 93! I must add, that I am also on the lowest dosage of a statin drug. Perhaps one of these days, I will be able to gett off of that and just stick with the healthier diet. Thank you.

What did NOT work
- 55 y/o M, 225@5'9". HDL at 39. Exercise vigorously 5-7 times per week, and consume ~5000 (mg?) fish oil daily. DOES NOT DO ANYTHING.

Raising HDL
- Though my hus was on on Statin 10mg, his HDL was 32 and we were on low fat diet. But we replaced lowfat milk with full cream milk, as per doctor's advice to increase the calcium intake, his HDL went to 52. But our physician doesnt agree with us that normal milk will increase HDL. So I am confused. Do anybody have the same experience? Will normal milk increase HDL? Pls reply me.

Raising HDL
- My HDL went up to 91 after my husband's massive heart attack 9 months ago. I'll tell you why: We had always eaten low fat/low cholesterol, but now we have added a 2-mile walk per day, cut portion sizes, lowered the carbs (which were mostly in the form of desserts), added more fruits & veggies, continued use of olive & canola oils, traded in chips for the occasional pretzel, eat more fish, light soups, vegetarian meals & whole grains--and lost weight and lowered cholesterol. He is on 20 mg simvastatin/day, and his cholesterol dropped to 119. We both look better and feel better, and he is blessed to be alive--so we want to keep it that way! Nothing like a brush with death to get your attention.

Gerson Method
- First my pre-Gerson #'s Total 278* HDL33* Triglycerides269* LDL195*....I follow the method to the letter for one month. In addition I started taking 1000mg omega, 2000mg Flax Seed oil ( part of the GM), 500mg Nicotinic Acid, Vit. D from 2000mg to 10000mg, added length of activity, not intensity, Reduced weight. Tested one month later #'s were, Total 111*HDL 88* Trig's 101* LDL33* The Gerson Method is not for every one, my sister went to the clinic for Diabetes, very severe, she no longer has it. All of her #'s were much the same as mine, she also improved in the same fashion. Live a more active life, eat nutritious organic food, cleanse the toxins from your body and watch what your immune system does. It kicks into high gear. Oh yeah, drink a little Tequila or wine. Agave + cholesterol lowers Bad, raises good and... it makes the heart happy. Best wishes friends....Kotn
