Statins may reduce inflammation, heart attacks and stroke

In the latest issue of Circulation, investigators report that all three statin drugs they tested - pravastatin, simvastatin, and atorvastatin - appear to reduce blood levels of C reactive protein.  Elevated levels of C reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, has been associated with a high risk of heart attack and stroke.

Investigators speculate that the antiinflammatory effects of statin drugs - in addition to their ability to lower LDL cholesterol levels - may explain their ability to reduce the incidence of heart attack and stroke.
