Heart Disease In The News Statins may reduce inflammation, heart attacks and
stroke In the latest issue of Circulation, investigators report that all three statin drugs they tested - pravastatin, simvastatin, and atorvastatin - appear to reduce blood levels of C reactive protein. Elevated levels of C reactive protein, a marker of inflammation, has been associated with a high risk of heart attack and stroke. Investigators speculate that the antiinflammatory effects of statin drugs - in addition to their ability to lower LDL cholesterol levels - may explain their ability to reduce the incidence of heart attack and stroke. |
