Bone marrow cells repair heart damage

For the first time, investigators have shown that stem cells taken from the bone marrow of adult mice could transform into functioning heart cells when injected into the damaged heart of a mouse.  The transformed stem cells showed the ability to pump, like nomal heart cells.  The report appeared in a recent issue of Nature.

This remarkable result opens the possibility of using human stem cells to replace heart cells damaged by a heart attack.  Such therapy - termed myogenesis - would be an entirely new, and particularly exciting, approach to treating heart failure.
