Failure to revascularize increases mortality

A new study in the April 15 European Heart Journal concludes that, among patients who have a medical reason to have coronary artery revascularization (either with bypass surgery or angioplasty/stent), and who are treated without revascularization (that is, with medical therapy only) have an increased risk of dying.

The study was conducted in Italy, and the authors believed that the main reason patients did not get revascularization in this study was because of a lack of medical capacity to perform all the procedures that were warranted.

This study is significant because only a limited number of studies show that revascularization actually improves survival in most patients.
