Heart Disease In The News Fitness reduces death from ALL causes Finnish researchers reported this week in the Archives of Internal Medicine that men who are physically fit have a significantly reduced risk of death from all causes - not just death from cardiovascular diseases. The researchers measured physical fitness in 1300 men whose average age of 52, and followed the men for 10 years. What they found was that men who were poorly conditioned had three times the risk of dying during the 10-year follow-up period as men who were in good physical condition. Further, the risk of death was not limited only to cardiovascular causes, but to ALL causes, including cancer. The researchers concluded that measuring physical fitness may be as important as assessing other risk factors, such as smoking, hypertension or diabetes. |
