Heart Disease In The News Do clerical jobs cause heart disease in women? Researchers from Kent State University reported this week that women in clerical jobs appeared to have an increased risk of atherosclerosis. The investigators screened 491 middle aged women, and found that those who were clerical workers had more evidence of atherosclerosis in their coronary arteries. The female clerical workers were more likely to lead sedentary lifestyles and to be overweight - known risk factors for heart disease. However, the investigators speculated that clerical workers may also be exposed to the very kind of stress that has recently been associated with increased risk - high-pressure jobs with strict deadlines and no control over one's own work. |
