Vitamin E doesn't help

Investigators reporting in the Journal of the American Medical Association report that healthy individuals aren't helping themselves by taking Vitamin E supplements.  Vitamin E is an antioxidant, and many have claimed that it can slow the oxidation of LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol,) thereby helping to prevent coronary artery disease.

In their study, investigators gave 30 healthy men and women Vitamin E supplements for 30 days. They found that the Vitamin E had no effect on their oxidation capacity.  The authors, noting that 2 of 3 randomized trials showed no benefit from Vitamin E supplementation, conclude that healthy individuals may be wasting their money by taking Vitamin E supplements.

They do point out that ill people, who may be under increased "oxidative stress," may gain some benefit from Vitamin E.
