Aspirin safe for the heart, even with ACE inhibitors

Both aspirin and the blood pressure lowering drugs called ACE inhibitors have been shown to be of benefit for patients with heart disease.  But doctors have worried about using these two drugs together, because some previous studies have suggested that doing so can lead to kidney damage.

In a new study reported in this week's Archives of Internal Medicine the effect of aspirin and ACE inhibitors was studied in over 14,000 heart attack survivors.  In this study, there was no evidence of a bad outcome when the two drugs were used together.  This study demonstrates that doctors can follow current guidelines about using these two drugs after heart attacks without worrying about adverse interactions.
