Heart disease is still the major cause of death in U.S.

The Center for Disease Control (CDC) has released a report showing that, while the incidence of cardiac death has fallen dramatically since 1960, and while there have been  major advances in diagnosis and treatment, heart disease remains the most common cause of death in the United States.  And the major cause of heart disease is coronary artery disease.

The CDC reports that 460,000 Americans died of coronary artery disease in 1998, the most recent year for which statistics are available, and that 44% of these died during heart attacks.  The CDC estimates that 12.4 million Americans have coronary artery disease. 

Investigators attribute the continued high incidence of coronary artery disease to the lifestyle of Americans - the continued incidence of smoking, the growing incidence of obesity, the sedentary lifestyles, and the diets high in fat.
