Exercise may help "bust" clots

One of the most effective treatments for an acute heart attack is to administer intravenous tissue plasminogen activator (TPA), a drug that helps dissolve the blood clots that cause most heart attacks.

A new study now shows that walking for 30 minutes can increase the amount of naturally occurring TPA in the bloodstream.  It has been recognized for a long time that exercise can improve the outcome of patients with coronary artery disease.  This new finding - that exercise can increase the "clot busting" agents in the bloodstream - offers one possible explanation of how exercise can be beneficial.
