Exercise prevents heart disease in diabetics

A study in the January 16 issue of the Annals of Internal Medicine documents that moderate exercise, such as brisk walking, significantly reduces the risk of heart disease in people with adult-onset diabetes (type 2 diabetes.)  Heart disease is the leading cause of death among diabetics, whose risk of heart disease is up to 4 times higher than in the general population.  

In these individuals, aerobic exercise conducted for 4 hours each week resulted in a reduction in heart disease of 40%.  Like all exercise programs, however, the exercise in diabetics must be carried out regularly and persistently to show this benefit.
