Glucose levels may predict heart risk - even among non-diabetics

A study published in the British Medical Journal suggests that the blood glucose level may be on a par with hypertension and cholesterol levels as a predictor of risk for coronary artery disease.  Even among non-diabetics - people with "normal" blood glucose levels - the amount of glucose in the blood serves a risk factor: the lower the better.  The implications of this study for people with "high normal" blood glucose levels is not immediately clear.  It is not likely that doctors will begin recommending diabetic drugs for these patients any time soon.  It seems prudent, however, to recommend a low-fat diet and plenty of exercise, since these healthy measures will, among other things, reduce blood glucose levels.
