Mitral valve -

The cardiac valves keep the blood moving in the right direction through the heart. The mitral valve regulates the opening between two of the heart’s four chambers – the left atrium and the left ventricle. As the powerful left ventricle contracts (ejecting oxygen-rich blood throughout the body), the mitral valve closes, thereby preventing a backwash of blood ("regurgitation") into the left atrium.
