Miracle Child

Our story starts when our 24 hour old son was diagnosed with "Triscupid Atresia". This is a condition where the triscupid valve did not develop. This valve supplies oxygen to mix with the blood. Because his never developed his oxygen level would drop and he would turn blue.

He was seen immediately by a cardiologist and he explained to us that this condition could be fixed but would require 2 open heart surgery procedures. We were beside ourselves. The first surgery should take place at 6 months of age. And the second at 18 months. Our son seemed to be doing good, but on his 6 week check-up, his oxygen level dropped into the low 60's ( danger zone) and required emergency surgery.

So we took off to St. Joseph's Children Hospital in Tampa,Fl. This was one of the hardest things I have ever had to do. Watching our precious son lay there in so much pain and we couldn't do anything. It was such a helpless feeling. He did awesome. He was home in 2 days. Seemed to be going great.  The cardiologist was very pleased. He went in for his second surgery in January 2001, and had the Glenn Shunt procedure done. He stayed in the hospital for 6 days.

He is now 1 year old and is doing GREAT!! He weighs 23 lbs. and the doctors are amazed. Nine out of ten children with a congenital heart defect don't want to eat, can't gain weight and are not very active. Our son is just the opposite. It is so amazing to me how this people (doctors) can do these procedures and save our childrens lives. I don't know how to repay someone like that. I feel so blessed for his cardiologist and his surgeon. They are the best. I will never ever be able to repay them for allowing us to share our sons life. He will go in for his final surgery in about 6 months, and then he should be able to do anything he wants to.

I feel like God gives us these obstacles in our lives to make us stronger and appreciate those he allowed to help our precious children. To all those who have a child with a heart defect, remain strong, rely on God, and never give up. Because to every obstacle you go through, there is a Happy ending..
