By , About.com GuideSeptember 5, 2011

Follow me on:

Supraventricular tachycardia, or SVT, is the general name given to an entire family of rapid cardiac arrhythmias that originate somewhere other than in the ventricles - generally, in the cardiac atria, which are the upper chambers of the heart. SVT is rarely life-threatening, but its symptoms can be extremely disrupting to one's life.

SVT comes in several varieties, and while the symptoms are similar among the different types, the treatment may be very different.

This article describes the various types of SVT, as well as the symptoms produced by these arrhythmias, their causes, and their treatment.
