Cardiac Effects of Thyroid Disease

Monday October 12, 2009

Thyroid disorders - either an underactive or overactive thyroid gland - are common, even in people with heart disease. And especially if you have heart disease, the symptoms produced by thyroid disorders, even if subtle, can be dangerous. Unfortunately doctors often attribute these symptoms to something other than thyroid disease, and sometimes it's up to the patient to lead them in the right direction. Read what you need to know about thyroid disorders and the heart, here.

Dear Dr. Fogoros,
As a subscriber to your e mail service, I just read your overview on the cardiac effects of thyroid disease. I eagerly read your succint yet thorough comments that address the many symptoms associated with both hypo and hyperthyroid disease, and importantly, the fact that left untreated thyroid disorders can have a lasting effect on overall cardiac health. I especially appreciate that you included the importance of patients themselves being watchful of symptoms, knowing what to look for, and feeling comfortable to suggest thyroid tests to their doctors. I also wanted to let you know that I posted a reference to your article on my Grave’s Disease blog which can be found at: http://eyesee.typepad.com/hyperthyroid_graves_eye/2008/12/a-quick-easy-read-dr-richard-fogoros-on-cardiac-effects-of-thyroid-disease.html

Thanks for this informative article! I have no doubt it will be extremely helpful to many patients trying to make sense of the array of symptoms often missed as being associated with a thyroid disorder.

I just read your article on thyroid disease. I have to say you have scared the daylights out of me. I have a hypothroid and take synthroid every morning. I have pac’s and pvc’s which my heart doctor says is benign. But since reading the article I wonder if it is caused by my thyroid. My blood work has been good so far.Are you saying that anyone with thyroid problems could die of heart failure at any time?
