The Mediterranean Diet for Heart Health

Friday October 9, 2009

It appears that the great "low-fat vs. low carb" diet controversy is at last coming to a resolution. So, which of these diets turns out to be better for heart health? As it turns out, neither. Instead, much of the information that has come to light over the last few years points toward a third diet as being best for a healthy heart: the Mediterranean diet. Read all about the Mediterranean diet here.

I agree whole-heartedly, Dr. Fogoros.

The British Medical Journal in September published a meta-analysis of Mediterranean diet studies, showing benefits in non-cardiac disease: lower rates of cancer, less incidence of dementia and Parkinsons disease, and longer lifespans.

For anyone interested, here’s my analysis of that meta-analysis:

[a meta, meta-analysis then?]

I have been doing some research for a Presentation on the Mediterranean Diet and I must say that these articles are informative in every aspect. I did not realize how exactly how heart healthy this form of eating style is.

Thank you for your informative emails each week. I must query you with regard to the above diet. The diets such as The China Study and Dr. Essestyne’s work suggest I believe the opposite to what you write. I was under the impression that there is no such thing as “healthy” oil. Does this mean that my Vegan diet without added oil is not as effective for quality of life and long term survival as the diet your article discusses?

Thank you very much for your time and patience.

Sorry to say that, Dr.Fogoros, you talking about healthy oil such olive oil and canola oil. WRONG. The healthy oils is EXTRA VERGIN OLIVE OIL the only one. Canola oil (canadian oil) is disgusting and come from petrol therefore dangerous for human consumption.I come from Italy. In the last 20 years, the (stipid) italians, thanks to the massive ads, they follow the american-style life. Thanks to them, the mortality of heart desease and cancer is growing and growing. Mediterraean style belong to the past.

Re comment #4.
The writer is incorrect,Canola oil is a seed oil.Has absolutely no relationship to petroleum. Canola is a coined word– CAN(ada)- O(oil)-L(low)- A(acid). It was developed in Canada from the Rapeseed plant reducing the Erucic Acid found in rapeseed(and many other plants). It’s grown world wide and is second only to Soybean as a seed oil source. It has a very low saturated fat content. Lower than olive oil.

Traditional Mediterranean diet and lifestyle fan here. I’m an author who has penned a book trilogy — all that tout this way of life that Europeans follow. Yes, olive oil, vinegar, and dark chocolate are good for you–in moderation. Yes, these superfoods along with fresh fruit/veggies, whole grains, nuts, fish, eggs, legumes, olive oil, chocolate, red wine–can and do help you to stave off heart disease, diabetes 2, obesity, and so much more. BTW: 57, three days ago…size 4, 122 lbs, bp at home yesterday? 110/67/55…It works. Oh, and physical activity…I swim/walk dogs. Anything that gets your heart beating, you getting a move on will do the trick.

For those who have mental stress, it is highly recommended to eat less than usual and enjoy favorite sporting activities, or stay active.

And the diets including wheat, fruits, veggies easy to digest are considered to be best for them. Out of them, fruits seem to make one stay active. As a meaningful tip, “lettuce” contains an ingredient to ease anxiety, mental stress, and helps sound sleep.

all sugar can cause serious health problems. But the fact is, fructose is the worst of the lot. It is metabolized to fat in your body far more rapidly than any other sugar, and, because most fructose is consumed in liquid form, as fruit juice or as soda, its negative metabolic effects are significantly magnified.

Many Americans use telemedicine to obtain hydrocodone containing products such as Hydrocodone, Lortab, Lorcet, Vicodin and other medications to treat chronic pain or anxiety. For chronic pain & anxiety patients without insurance telemedicine is often the only affordable way to obtain medications. Because prices for pain clinics, physiotherapy and visits to local physicians are often unaffordable for uninsured middle class US citizens it is no surprise that many buy their medications online.
If you ever went to a pain clinic you likely had to visit every month in order to receive your prescriptions. This findrxonline what Not only is the price of a consultation very steep (usually around $500 for initial and $250+ for follow ups) but then there is also the cost of expensive shots and medications. There are also many people who need surgery but who can’t afford it. For others who already had surgery and are still experiencing chronic pain there may not even be any solution besides ongoing pain management with strong pain medications.
