New Guidelines on Physical Activity

Friday April 10, 2009
Earlier this year, the Department of Health and Human Services released new guidelines for Americans on physical activity.

The approach DHHS has taken in publishing these guidelines is a realistic one - much more realistic, for instance than the report put out by the Institute of Medicine a few years ago (which set out goals that few individuals could hope to achieve).

The DHHS guidelines recognize that, while it is true that the more exercise you do the greater the health benefits, it is also true that the majority of health benefits can be realized with 150 minutes of moderate-intensity exercise each week, a level of physical activity that can be achieved by most of us. Furthermore, they tailor their guidelines for children and adolescents, healthy adults, and older people.

You can read more about the new guidelines on physical activity here.
