You Mean, That "Natural" Male Enhancement Stuff Really Works?

Thursday November 29, 2007
Earlier this month, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recalled three dietary supplements widely advertised as all-natural "male enhancement" products. See the recall notice here.

It seems, according to the FDA announcement, that at least some batches of these popular products (i.e., the batches that work) contain thione or piparadino vardenafil, which are true phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) inhibitors, and are analogs of (i.e., substances very close to) the PDE-5 inhibitors in Viagra, Levitra, and Cialis. In its recall, the FDA explained that these "dietary supplements," like their prescription cousins, could pose risks to men who have heart disease and are taking certain cardiac drugs - especially nitrates.

This is not the first time the FDA recalled a "natural" product because it turned out to contain a form of a regulated, pharmaceutical product. When red yeast rice (a dietary supplement taken to reduce cholesterol) was found to contain an actual statin drug, FDA acted to remove the product from the shelf. The lovastatin in red yeast rice was indeed natural - the statin drugs were originally derived from yeast products.

The situation is different in the case of "natural" ED drugs, however. Here - though the FDA recall notice does not say so - the PDE-5 inhibitors have been carefully synthesized by black-market chemists, and illegally added to the final product. In a presentation to the United States Pharmacopeia Annual Scientific Meeting earlier this year, FDA scientist Samuel R. Gratz showed that the unlabelled PDE-5 inhibitors in "all natural" herbal remedies are, in fact, synthetic. Further, it turns out that it's fairly easy to chemically alter PDE-5 inhibitors, in order to derive a whole host of analogs. And indeed, this is apparently what is happening. In several analyses of a single "all natural" product over a 16-month period of time, FDA investigators found different active ingredients in each analysis.

Obviously, nothing is known about the short-term or long-term safety of these new substances. Whether the FDA (or other regulatory agencies around the world, since the contraband and multiform PDE-5 inhibitors are being found worldwide in "male enhancement" products) will ever be able to keep up with the impressive profit-driven creativity being displayed by the black-market chemists is an open question.

In the meantime, men who have heart disease and are taking cardiac drugs should avoid these products. If you desire therapy for ED, you're a lot safer getting it from your doctor, with known quantities of well studied and carefully regulated prescription pharmaceuticals.

Just so you know – drugs are dangerous and can kill you. It’s best to use them with medical supervision. In addition “Natural” products contain the same “Chemicals” that everyone fears – or else they do not work.

Doctors are in bed with the drug companies and are driving health care costs to outrageous limits. Of course they will do anything to protect their turf like piling on when something comes along to threaten their unregulated profits. FDA + drug companies + doctors’ greed = HIGH costs for consumers.

Men, go natural. The herbal supplements are much safer than whatever chemicals the drug companies are coming up with. Don’t buy into their propaganda. If you are having ED problems look at all the alternatives, including natural male enhancement.

Boy, Am I glad I found this forum. Anyone who has seen improvement in their sex lives due to pills deserves a hand. However, as someone who tried ALL sorts of things to make my penis bigger, my erections harder, and my ejaculations more voluminous, I can tell you that overall, true natural methods like diet, exercise, penis exercises (and yes, I know the penis is not a muscle, but it responds to “trauma” like a bone does, by growing), stress reduction, etc are really the key. In my case, the fundamental issue was one of self-esteem. I set up a blog web site where I go into more detail. Come read my Penis Enlargement-Better Sex Life Story HERE
