Shortly after the Adult Treatment Panel III (ATP III) guidelines from the National Cholesterol Education Program (NCEP) were last published in 2002, several clinical trials came out suggesting that target LDL cholesterol levels under those guidelines were too conservative. As a result the NCEP panel commented on their guidelines, in light of this new evidence, in 2004. Target LDL levels were reduced substantially in this revision. You can read about it here.
